The History of Turkish Towels

by Ozge Uyanik Fien Helfman 05 May 2023

The earliest evidence of Turkish towels dates back to the 17th century. During this time, Turkish baths or hammams were an important part of daily life in the Ottoman Empire. Turkish towels were used in these baths as a way to cover oneself while moving from one room to another.

In the early 18th century, the production of Turkish towels became more widespread. Weavers in the town of Bursa, Turkey began to produce the towels in larger quantities and with more intricate designs. The towels were made using a technique called the 'double-looped pile' which involves weaving the cotton in a loop, making the towels soft and absorbent.

Over the years, Turkish towels became an important part of Turkish culture. They were used not only in hammams but also as a way to cover tables, to wrap food, and as a blanket during cold nights. Turkish towels were also given as gifts during important ceremonies such as weddings.

During the 19th century, Turkish towels became popular among European aristocracy. They were a symbol of luxury and sophistication and were often used as a decorative item in homes. In the early 20th century, Turkish towels were exported to other countries, including the United States, where they gained immense popularity.

Today, Turkish towels are loved all around the world for their softness, absorbency, and versatility. They are used not only in hammams but also as a beach towel, a scarf, a throw blanket, and even as a tablecloth. Turkish towels come in a wide range of colors and patterns, making them a stylish addition to any home.

In conclusion, Turkish towels have a fascinating history that dates back centuries. From their origins in Turkish hammams to their popularity among European aristocracy, these towels have come a long way. Today, Turkish towels continue to be loved for their unique features and benefits, making them a must-have item in any home.

What is Lorem Ipsum? Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry's standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum. Why do we use it? It is a long established fact that a reader will be distracted by the readable content of a page when looking at its layout. The point of using Lorem Ipsum is that it has a more-or-less normal distribution of letters, as opposed to using 'Content here, content here', making it look like readable English. Many desktop publishing packages and web page editors now use Lorem Ipsum as their default model text, and a search for 'lorem ipsum' will uncover many web sites still in their infancy. Various versions have evolved over the years, sometimes by accident, sometimes on purpose (injected humour and the like).
